Vickie Lynn Belk

Vickie Lynn Belk was the daughter of the late Lonnie and Maydell Belk. She was born on March 20, 1951 and departed this life on August 29, 1979. Vickie was baptized at Oakland Baptist Church (OBC) by the late Rev. L. H. Mills and was one of Oakland’s faithful members. She served OBC in various capacities such as the Director of the Board of Education, Church Clerk, Sunday School Secretary and Chairperson of the Black History Program.

Because of Vickie’s devotion to the youth of OBC, and her efforts to further the Christian ministry through education, the Vickie Belk Scholarship was established in 1980.

This scholarship was created under the leadership of the late Rev. A. R. Preston. The first recipient of the scholarship was Karen Davis in 1982 and since that time scholarships have been awarded to youth of OBC yearly with some years having as few as one graduate (1982 – 1985) and others with as many as seven graduates (1993 and 2005). These scholarships would not be possible without the generous support of member and non-member donations.

The OBC family is proud to honor the memory of Vickie every year with various fundraisers (e.g., an Annual Fall Concert). We pray that Vickie’s legacy will continue and remain an inspiration to all of our graduates.
